Internationally acclaimed artist Jonas Mekas was America’s leading experimental filmmaker in the 1960-70s. He showed his video-stills at galerie du jour agnès b. for the first time in February-March 1996. Jonas Mekas was also the founder and director of the Anthology Film Archives, which preserve and promote hundreds of rare and independent movies. Early in his career, his penchant for very brief scenes inspired Jonas to select images to print as photographs. It was a dream shared by many. He also demonstrated his great sensitivity and attachment to living beings, landscapes, nature and the seasons. His video-stills are at the heart of his films, the base unit, comparable to the lines in a poem.
