Le Grosso modo compiles 600 drawings, most of them taken from notebooks in which Jacques Floret notes down ideas, sketches, tries out tricks, sketches funny compositions or, more difficult as we know, tries to let a line run freely on the page.
On closer inspection, however, Le Grosso modo differs from a simple informal collection of drawings in the links woven from one image to the next. In the mode “I’m fed up, marabout, piece of string, horse saddle, race horse, running, foot on the ground…”, each image is linked by a detail, a quality of line or a motif to the previous image, and hangs on to the one that follows in the same way: a theme emerges, which soon leaves its place, thanks to formal similarities, to another one that leaves its place to another one, etc. From close to close, from analogy to resemblance, a sequential sequence is formed, a thread is unwound that will return to form at the other end of the reading, roughly speaking, a ball of yarn that must be unwound again. Grosso modo opens with a preface-fiction by Frédéric Ciriez and closes with a photograph by Pierre Antoine.
