“I like trains, you have time to look around.” The sentence is simple, almost trivial. It is not a passionate declaration of consuming love, but the thoughtful murmur of someone gently rocked by the steady rolling of the train car, their eyes gliding over the landscape.
Drawn in the first person, these hypnotic snapshots follow one another as the hours pass, the light changes, or a ticket inspector walks by. From the train, an experience of a suspended place, both present and already past, collective and solitary, Yann Kebbi retains only fragments: spying on his neighbor in a reflection, pressing his forehead against the window and scrutinizing the gardens that pass by… Alert, curious, or contemplative, the traveler is defined, for the duration of the journey, only by what he sees. A major figure in contemporary drawing, Yann Kebbi deploys, in very large format, a complex, physical, almost meditative penwork, complemented by a powerful series of color monotypes.
After several prestigious exhibitions (Fondation Cartier, Galerie Martel, etc.), he has chosen the book as his medium of expression, continuing his deeply singular and inspired work. His freehand lines capture the essence of a journey, and we remain motionless, letting the drawings take over our gaze.
