During the pandemic, photographer Philippe Levy invited more than a hundred music lovers to join him in his apartment, which was transformed into a studio, for a session unlike any other: to make two deep black and white images, taken at the time of a record chosen from his library.
More than a gallery of portraits, it is a question for the photographer of giving a face to these “nonessentials” who will remain in the impossibility of expressing themselves during long months. A form of silent protest, but also a way to (re)connect with a wider network of friends and artists, driven by a common passion, at a time when everyone had to lock themselves up at home, deprived of concerts, deprived of record shops, but fortunately not of music.
The photographic act, “barrier gesture” by essence technical, allows him to find his “friends of the music” then, with the liking of elective affinities, the portraits multiplying, these sessions of resistance became moments of meeting… in music obviously.
The photographer then asked each guest to write and deliver a few lines on the record serving as a soundtrack to the session: memories, tributes or anecdotes.
This book gathers this hundred of portraits of personalities such as Nova Materia, Zombie Zombie, Sister Iodine, Laurent Garnier, Vox Low, Stephen O’Malley, Jean-Luc Verna, Jessica 93, Theo Hakola, Ben Shemie, Jennifer Cardini, Oko DJ, Jac Berrocal …
As well as a hundred of reviewed records to discover or rediscover.
