Launching & signing of Topoï #5 by Claire Nicolet

” Claire Nicolet, born in 1988, is a painter and cartoonist. Topoï is her graphic journal, started in 2017, in which she combines drawings and snippets of texts.
In this field, she draws furrows, deposits her impressions, lets some rest while she works on others. In this way, she orders the wasteland that is our world: by cuttings, maceration, fallowing and juxtaposition.
This patient practice is nourished by what she sees, imagines, dreams and feels. Claire Nicolet’s drawing, precise and curious, does not aim at virtuosity: it appears rather as an insatiable appetite.

To fix the passage of time seems to be the hidden quest of this endless work. Over the pages, patterns appear, distort and respond to each other. Small written fragments, aphorisms, legends or quotations are mixed in. The cold reality is sometimes transcribed, sometimes transfigured. Sometimes, it is the imaginary which emerges, comical or disturbing.

Le Trainailleur proposes a visit of the Topoï through an anthology, which gathers in a series of small thematic volumes this “infinite series”. He hopes to share the troubling sensation of reading Claire Nicolet’s work: seeing the world through her eyes and thinking it in her words – as if the motifs of a topographical map were invading the world they represent.“
