Performance | Calligraphy of Movements

Performance with dancers Jamsy and Victor Virnot, captured live by Juliette Baigné

Saturday February 11, 2023 at 4:30 p.m.

Specially conceived for the Galerie du Jour, the performance proposes a moment embodied by the dancers Victor Virnot and Jamsy, captured live by Juliette Baigné in the form of Calligraphies of movements.

Both of them, when they dance, let themselves be overflowed by the vitality that runs through them. By the intensity of their presence, one could say that they enter in dance, as one enters in trance. They take support on their sufferings to better enter this space which one could call the extreme life. By dancing, Jamsy and Victor have from then on this capacity to overlive, they exist in overflow. And this vitality to the brim, they offer it to us, by giving us to live a little bit stronger, by addressing our animality, and by brutally summoning our full attention, which is none other than our whole presence in the moment. There is an urgency to live. What can we do if not try to capture it? The calligraphies of movements are a device of capture, a way to seize the movement which expresses a vitality through a body. To capture the living which does not cease to escape us, to exceed us, to capture what is vital. Calligraphy to honor, in the sense of treating with consideration, with a lot of regard and respect, these lives that pulsate.

Artists : Juliette Baigné, Jamsy, Victor Virnot

Juliette Baigné, visual artist, performer : Visual artist and dancer Juliette Baigné lives and works in Paris. Her work focuses on movement as a vector of balance and health. Close to Taoist thought, inspired by the Chinese medicine she practices, she conducts research on the different types of movements: which ones maintain vitality, which ones diminish it? A graduate of the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs de Paris and the Paris Conservatories, her practice is polymorphous: drawing, performance, ink, installation, video… Juliette adapts to the character of the movement she investigates. Her research within the visual arts stems from a rigorous and essential body training to which she devotes herself: that of dance, but also of practices stemming from the fields of Eastern thought such as meditation, qigong or yoga. In 2022, she was in residence at the KORA art center in Puglia as part of the Nuovo Grand tour with the French Embassy in Italy and the French Institute. She performs and exhibits regularly in Paris, in the XIVth district with the solo exhibitions Soleil d’hiver (2021-2022), Baigné dans l’été (2021) or within group shows: Impermanences at the Galerie du Crous de Paris with the Collectif Partout (2021), Capture 77 at the Galerie du Montparnasse, Frontières with the Nouveaux collectionneurs at the Espace Voltaire, Matières Premières, with Octopus coopérative, rue des Gravilliers…

Jamsy, dancer, performer : Born in 1991, Jamsy is a professional dancer, specialized in KRUMP. It is in this style that he wins in 2019 after several battles and during the International Illest Battle the title of World Champion, as well as the finalist in 2021. In recent years, he has been one of the representatives of krump on the contemporary artistic scene, with projects such as Les Indes Galantes, Rameau’s opera under the initiative of Clément Cogitore at the Paris Opera, XXY with the Cie Tzigart, Battle 3K with the Cie Traverses, or AMP a solo 100% krump. In 2023, he signed several international projects, including the Cruzamentos project between France and Brazil, led by the French Institute. In parallel to his career on stage and battle, he regularly supervises krump workshops abroad (Argentina, Brazil, India, Japan …) and has under his responsibility his “Fam”, “JBKWORLD” composed of a group of 13 international dancers. Jamsy also has several experiences in the world of TV: semi-finalist in the show “La France a un incroyable Talent” with his solo La Libération in 2019, on the set of “On est en direct” of France 2 with Laurent Ruquier in 2020, with L’héroïsme in Culture BOX on the channel France 4 or in the series “Viens On Danse” for ARTE where he intervenes as a choreographer and extra. In the press, several articles have been devoted to him in newspapers such as Le Monde, Le Parisien, and several local press.

Victor Virnot, dancer, performer : Victor Virnot (France, born in 1991) trained at the Conservatory of Montreuil, at the CRR of Paris and then at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse in contemporary dance. During his training – and afterwards – he never ceased to immerse himself in different worlds such as Krump, circus and martial arts. In love with exploring choreographic materials and movement qualities, he has participated in several creations and has been an interpreter for different choreographers in France and abroad: Emmanuelle Grach, Arthur Harel, Yuval Pick, Philippe Lafeuille, Thierry Escarmant, Christine Bastain, Sébastien Lefrançois, David Drouard, Andrew Skeels, Blanca Li and La Vouivre. In 2022, he also worked in the field of visual arts with the performances Rhizome at the contemporary art center l’H du siège, Rosebud by the composer Matthias Krüger at the Centre Pompidou, Contacts with Juliette Baigné at the Basilique de Larchant, and for Blanca Li’s latest opera, Didon et Ennée with the artists Caty Olive and Evy Keller.
